The percentage increase formula

((New − Original) ÷ Original) × 100

Subtract the original value from the new value. Divide that difference by the original value, then multiply by 100.

The original value is the baseline. The new value is the amount after the change. Dividing by the original makes the answer relative to where the value started, so increases of different sizes can be compared fairly.

All three modes use the same relationship between the original value, new value, and rate. The calculator simply rearranges the formula for the missing number.

Example: increase from $80 to $100

The amount increased by $20. That $20 is one quarter of the original $80, so the percentage increase is 25%.

The new value is 125% of the original value. That does not mean the increase itself is 125%. The increase is only the extra part: 25%.

Understand every part of the result

A percentage is easier to trust when you can see the numbers behind it. The result panel separates three related answers.

Difference
The new value minus the original value. This is the absolute amount gained.
Percentage increase
The difference measured as a share of the original value.
Multiplier
The new value divided by the original. A multiplier of 1.25× means the new value is 125% of the starting value.

If the result is negative, the value went down. The calculator labels that result as a percentage decrease so the direction is clear.

Use the original value as the baseline

Always divide the increase by the original value. Dividing by the new value answers a different question and produces the wrong rate.

Original value is zero: a percentage increase is undefined because the formula would divide by zero. Read the increase-from-zero explanation.

Values are equal: the difference and percentage increase are both zero.

New value is smaller: the same calculation produces a decrease. The direction changes, but the original value is still the baseline.

Common percentage increase mistakes

  1. Using the new value as the divisor. The percentage must be measured from the original baseline.
  2. Reporting the multiplier as the increase. A result of 1.30× means the new value is 130% of the original, but the increase is 30%.
  3. Confusing percent with percentage points. A rate moving from 10% to 12% rises by 2 percentage points but increases by 20%. See percentage points versus percent.
  4. Adding repeated rates. Successive increases use a changing baseline, so they compound. Read how compound percentage increases work.
  5. Reversing an increase by subtraction. To recover an original value, divide by the multiplier. Follow the reverse percentage formula.

What is a percentage increase?

A percentage increase shows how much a value grew compared with its original value. The original value is the baseline.

How is percentage increase calculated?

Subtract the original value from the new value. Divide the difference by the original value, then multiply by 100.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

Percent describes relative change. Percentage points describe the direct difference between two percentages.

What happens when the new value is lower?

The calculator reports a percentage decrease and shows the size of the decrease.

Can I use decimals and large numbers?

Yes. You can enter decimals, commas, dollar signs, and large values. Results are rounded only for display.

Can I calculate a percentage increase from zero?

No. A percentage increase needs a nonzero original value because the formula divides by the original value. From zero, report the absolute change instead.

How do I find the original value before an increase?

Divide the final value by one plus the percentage rate written as a decimal. You can also choose “Find original” in the calculator.
